Slow fashion is a term we’re seeing more and more of and that is because as consumers, we’re making more conscious decisions when it comes to shopping for our wardrobe. Thrifted

“Thrifted” is an American term used to describe items sourced from charity shops, thrift stores, vintage markets, car boot sales, or online second hand retailers. Just with “preloved” there is no difference between “thrifted” and “second hand,” other than “thrifted is a verb to describe the action of finding something second hand.

This is the original selling price by the original retailer of an item. Second hand retailer or sellers may use this to signify the saving when compared to the second hand price for a particular item.

Consignment stores are a shop or online retailer that sells items on behalf of the original owner and takes a percentage of the sale once the item sells. Second Hand Condition Categories

second hand clothes tag

Understanding the condition of an item when shopping second hand online the most important aspect is of knowing that particular item’s features. The condition of an item determines its second hand value. Second hand shoppers have varying levels of condition that they are willing to accept which is why it is important to know the condition of each item you buy second hand online.

NWOT (New Without Tags)

We remain slightly dubious of items listed as “NWOT” or “new without tags” because the original retailer tag is the only indicator that this particular item hasn’t be worn for a prolonged period of time. Items listed with this condition should only really be seen on C2C platforms where the seller purchased the item directly from the retailer, removed the tags but never wore the item and now wishes to sell it on.

Vintage

Is vintage the same as second hand? The answer can be yes, and no. Vintage refers to an item that is older than 20 years, at the time of writing this blog anything manufactured in 2006 or prior would be considered vintage. But vintage items can also be referred to as second hand, hence the confusion. “Vintage” is a term that is used a lot as it can be a reason to justify an inflated price. Be wary of sellers or retailers who overuse the term “vintage” without any additional verification that their items are dated 20+ years.

Antique

Items categorised as “antique” is generally considered to be at least 100 years old and valued for its age, rarity, craftsmanship, or historical significance.
