Why Second Hand Home Decor Is Booming in 2026

In July 2025, Interior Daily reported that second hand home décor and furniture is the fastest growing sector of the second hand retail industry. In the UK, since the COVID era, we have seen a boom in the demand for second hand clothing, but it seems now that home décor and furniture are about to take centre stage for 2026.

Choosing second hand over a brand new is the catalyst for breaking away from trends and finding your own personal style to guide your purchases. More and more second hand shoppers are turning away from mass produced home décor as we see a rise in fast homewares from retail chains and supermarkets, that ultimately end up in landfill.

The presence of second hand home décor and furniture in second hand shops and charity shops isn’t new, however we’re now seeing a shift towards online second hand home décor instead. This shift is spurred on by a number of factors such as improved delivery services, better protective packaging for transit and the introduction of new homeware categories on online marketplaces.

By the end of this guide, you’ll know what makes a second hand home décor piece unique, where you can find the best pieces for any room in your home and how to style your latest second hand home décor finds.

What Makes Second Hand Home Decor Truly “Unique”?

If second hand home décor is just a piece of home décor that has had a previous owner, what makes it “unique?” When shopping for second hand home décor online, you’re forced to think past the readily available home décor pieces you would find in every home. Instead, what is available is a wonderful collection of pieces that serve many purposes from different eras.

The term “second hand” is defined as anything that has a previous owner, where as “vintage” is defined as anything that is 20 years or older.

Let me show you an example, I typed in “unique home décor” into three different websites known for selling second hand home décor. As you can see, the results show just how varied a second hand home décor piece can be.

Whilst a second hand home décor piece may not be considered unique in the sense it is the only one that exists, finding that item available second hand at a bargain price and you know that piece will be the perfect fit in your home is unique.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that when you see a unique second hand home décor piece online you will be able to find it elsewhere in the future. Speaking from personal experience, thrift regret is painstaking. Unless you can find the exact same item on multiple websites, don’t think that if you don’t buy it there and then you will be able to find it again in the future.

How to Identify Quality Second Hand Home Decor Online

Unlike buying second hand home décor in person, when shopping online you will always face an impenetrable barrier, the inability to hold, touch and feel the item before you buy it. Being able to see the item in person enables you to get a feel for the size of the item and give you a better idea of the condition.

Being unable to do this when browsing second hand home décor online shouldn’t put you off. Instead, you need to identify the measurements and condition of the item using the information available in the product description and images.

Below, I have given an example of a good and bad second hand home décor website listing. One is taken from our website and the other from an eBay marketplace listing.

Immediately we can see the differences in image quality and amount of information provided about the item, both of which are critical to you understanding what you are buying before you hit that “checkout” button.

I’ve created a quick checklist that you can use to confirm the condition of a second hand home décor item online.

  • Does the seller or retailer explain what condition it is in? E.g. excellent condition, no signs of use, small signs of age etc.
  • If any faults are mentioned in the description, are these shown in the images provided?
  • Do the images show the item at every angle and are you able to zoom in an inspect the item further?

If you can’t answer to “yes” to all these questions, I would recommend refraining from purchasing and instead contacting the seller or retailer for the additional information and pictures you require in order to feel confident in your purchase.

Know How to Spot Good Quality Pieces

The piece of advice I always give to anyone starting their second hand home décor buying journey online, is to look out for natural and solid materials. Think solid wood, stone, brass, silver plated, glass not plastic. Pieces made using these materials are inevitably higher quality than their plastic, mass produced counterparts.

Think of a second hand home décor piece you would like to buy online, e.g. a letter rack for your hallway and search into Google “second hand [insert solid and natural material here] letter rack. This is a great way to immediately narrow down your search to premium choices that will last longer in busy homes and are less likely to have been mass produced.

Best Types of Second Hand Home Decor to Buy Online

This leads nicely onto the part of the guide where I can share some of my tips on the best types of second hand home décor to buy online, especially if you want to buy something unique.

Find pieces with a bit of history or a story to them – Look for pieces that have a maker or producer that you can then search and find a little bit more about the history of that item. This doesn’t have to mean the item is vintage, but the item having a maker or producer that is marked on the item indicates higher quality and less production runs therefore making it more unique.

Think practical first – When searching for a unique home décor piece online, it good to have a rough idea on what you are looking for first as there are millions of items to choose from. I always recommend thinking of something practical first. What is missing from your home that would be a practical addition? For example, a new set of tumbler glasses or a letter rack or a bathroom mirror.

Textiles and soft furnishings – Did you know that cushion covers are the most disposed of home décor item in the UK according to a study done in 2022? This is because they are widely available, low cost, sometimes low quality and difficult to keep clean. If you’re in need of a new cushion cover or throw, why not consider second hand? Plus, soft items are easier to ship and are less likely to be damaged in transit.

How to Style Unique Second Hand Pieces in a Modern Home

When it comes to styling your first or latest unique second hand home décor find, forget about perfection and matching everything together. Instead, think co-ordinating. Here are some of my top tips for styling second hand home décor that you can apply to any piece in any room.

Don’t be afraid to mix eras – This may sound easy to do but, in the moment, putting a solid brass tray in the middle of modern coffee table may seem a bit crazy. Think bigger than this small part of your room, instead look at how it works in the space in its entirety. Mixing different eras can create a truly unique interior.

Second hand, not clutter – There is a fine line between a home full of vintage and second hand home décor treasures and a cluttered home and you will know if you have crossed that line when you’re tripping over pieces and moving pieces out of the way just to exist in your home. To refrain from excess second hand home décor buying, always think practical first and only ever buy non-practical pieces when it really is a special piece you wouldn’t stop thinking about if you didn’t buy it.

Forget the trends –  The colour of 2026, according to pantone is “cloud dancer”, an off-white colour and in the eyes of a colour enthusiast, an oh so boring colour. Now, pastel and neutral tones are calming and soothing which works well in a busy household. However, a trend isn’t here to stay whereas your unique second hand home décor piece is. Think outside of the trends and your second hand home décor piece will certainly be unique.

Common Mistakes When Buying Second-Hand Home Decor Online

Not checking measurements this is just a huge “no, no.” But unfortunately, I am always surprised at how many people do this. Use the measurements provided to check that your second hand home décor piece will fit in your home how you would like it to.

Buying just because it’s “cheap” – Another huge “no, no.” Buying a second hand home décor piece simply because it’s cheap only contributes to long term problem of overconsumption that second hand shopping is trying to prevent.

Ignoring materials – You could get a big surprise when a picture frame you thought was wood simply because it looked like it and instead it is plastic made to look like wood. Now you have an item you don’t want, you’ve most likely overpaid and now you need to return it, costing you time and the environment emissions.

Not doing your research on where you’re buying from – Know who you’re buying from, whether that be a second hand retailer like Sunshine Thrift or an online marketplace seller. What are their reviews like? Do they have a social media presence? What are their return policies? Not knowing crucial information like this could result in you spending money with an untrustworthy and difficult seller. Who has time for that?
